What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been practiced in China for several thousand years. According to ancient Chinese medical theory, the life force (called Qi and pronounced "chee") flows through the body via a network of invisible channels (called meridians), these regulate all physical and mental processes.  There are 12 main channels, six of which are yin and six are yang. Each meridian is related to, and named after an organ or function, the main ones are: the lung, kidney, gallbladder, liver, stomach, spleen, heart, small intestine, large intestine, urinary bladder, san jiao and pericardium.

The meridians connect within the body’s tissues and organs, surfacing at some 360 places near the skin are identified as acupuncture points. The points located along a particular meridian are believed capable of affecting the associated internal organ.

Very fine needles are inserted into acupuncture points along the meridians where energy imbalance has been diagnosed. This practice enhances the body natural healing by regulating the energy flow and restoring balance. This promotes better blood flow and encourages healing.
